NFL Star Nick Mangold's Emotional Appeal: Finding a Kidney Donor (2025)

NFL legend Nick Mangold makes emotional plea for kidney donor: 'I thought I'd have more time'

Former New York Jets center Nick Mangold has publicly appealed to fans for a life-saving kidney donation. In a heartfelt Instagram post (https://www.instagram.com/p/DPzWHlqkccz/), the 41-year-old revealed his private battle with a serious health condition since 2006, a genetic defect leading to chronic kidney disease. With no family donor available, Mangold is now seeking a public match.

"To my NY Jets and Ohio State Buckeye fans, this isn't easy, but I want to be transparent about my health journey," Nick began. "In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect causing chronic kidney disease. After a challenging summer, I'm on dialysis while awaiting a kidney transplant. I knew this day would come, but I thought I'd have more time."

Mangold explained his public appeal, stating, "I don't have any family who can donate at the moment, so I'm reaching out to you, our NY Jets and Ohio State communities. I need a kidney donor with type O blood."

He provided instructions for potential donors: register through Columbia University's Irving Medical Center using his full name, Nicholas Mangold, and birthday, January 13, 1984. Mangold expressed his gratitude, saying, "I'm incredibly thankful to anyone who considers donating. My family has been my rock, and this situation has made me appreciate their support and the community's backing."

Despite the challenges, Nick remains positive, focusing on the path ahead. "I'm looking forward to better days and regaining full strength soon," he concluded.

The response was overwhelming, with fans offering support. One fan wrote, "Signed up! Ready to help if approved. Type O, lifelong Jets supporter." Another said, "Applied! Type O+, Buckeyes fan! Wishing you all the best." A third fan added, "Submitted my info. Anything for the best center ever."

Nick Mangold, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time first-team All-Pro, retired in 2016 after an 11-season career with the Jets. He played 171 games, becoming one of the most respected offensive linemen in franchise history. He was inducted into the Jets' Ring of Honour in 2022.
